150 Sq Ft Project Area Example
Calculations Step-by-Step
Instructions and formula for calculating project area, materials along with helpful items checklist
Step 1: Calculate Project Square Feet
The paving stone you select may modify the size of your project
(Example project below based on 150 sq. ft. area)
Length | 10 |
Width | 15 |
Project Sq. Ft. (Length x Width) | 150 |
How Many Pieces Do I Need To Buy?
Step 2: PaverBase Panels
Equals 4″ of compacted base (replaces bag base)
(Project sq. ft. ÷ sq. ft. of panel = total number of panels – see example below)
Project Sq. Ft. | Sq. Ft. Panel | # Panels
Lowe’s & Menards Panel | 150 divided by (÷) | 6 | equals (=) 25 |
Home Depot Panel | 150 divided by (÷) | 5 | equals (=) 30 |
Step 3: All Purpose Sand*
*Also called leveling sand, paver sand and step-2 sand
Only need 1/2″ with panels – max sand you can use is 1″ sand
(Project sq. ft. ÷ cu. ft. of sand = total number of bags – see example below)
Different Names of Sand by Region | Project Sq. Ft. | 1/2 Cu. Ft. | # Bags (for 1/2″ of sand) |
*Leveling Sand, Paver Sand, All Purpose Sand & Step 2 Sand | 150 divided by (÷) | 12 | equals (=) 12.5 |
Project Sq. Ft. | 3/4 Cu. Ft. | # Bags (for 3/4″ of sand)
150 divided by (÷) | 9 | equals (=) 16.7
Project Sq. Ft. | 1″ Cu. Ft. (Max) | # Bags (for 1″ of sand)
150 divided by (÷) | 6 | equals (=) 25.0 |
Important Note: Never use play sand. Must use fabric to hold in sand.
Step 4: Landscape Fabric
Use 20 yr to 30 yr or lifetime warranty type, only purpose is to hold in the sand
(Project sq. ft. ÷ size of fabric roll = total amount of rolls – see example below)
Project Sq. Ft. | Size of Fabric Roll | # Rolls |
150 | 150 | 1 |
Step 5: Patio Stones, Pavers, Flagstones, Porcelain Tiles, Athletic Courts, Rubber, Turf
Select Paving Stone Size (All Sizes Are Nominal)
(Project sq. ft. ÷ stones sq. ft. = total number of paving stones – see example below)
Calculate How Many – “Patio Stones”
Project Sq. Ft. | Stones Sq. Ft. | # Paving Stones | 5% additional for Breakage |
150 divided by (÷) | 1.78 | equals (=) 84.3 | 88.5 |
Calculate How Many – “Pavers”
Project Sq. Ft. | Stones Sq. Ft. | # Paving Stones | 5% additional for Breakage |
150 multiplied by (x) | 4.5 | equals (=) 675 | 708.8 |
Paving Stone Size not listed?
Calculate Paving Stone Sq. In. & Sq. Ft.
Stone Length | Stone Width | Total Sq. In. | Sq. Ft. |
24 multiplied by (x) | 36 | equals (=) 864 | or equals (=) 6 |
*Note: Calculation is estimated

Step 6: Edgers and Walls
Select stone width/size below*
(Project length ÷ unit or linear. ft. = total number of edgers or walls – see example below)
Calculate How Many – “Edgers” & “Walls”
Project Length | Unit or Linear Ft. | # Edgers or Walls |
25 divided by (÷) | 1.33 | equals (=) 18.8 |
For Walls | ||

16 | 1.33 | |
17 | 1.42 | |
18 | 1.50 | |
24 | 2.00 |
*Note: All sizes are nominal
Step 7: Edge Restraints and Spikes
For unsupported sides – There are 2 edge restraint sizes: 6′ or 8′
Project Linear Ft. | Edge Restraint Length | # Edge Restraints |
35 divided by (÷) | 6 | equals (=) 5.8 |
# Of Edge Restraints | # Spikes Per Edge Restraint | # Spikes |
5.8 multiplied (x) | 6 | equals (=) 35 |
